Quad bike rolls down hill and kills two

A quad bike rolled down a hill in remote North Otago, killing two people in a high country station they did not have permission to be in.

Two people died in a quad bike crash in the Kakanui ranges, near Ranfurly, on Saturday afternoon (23/3/2019)

Dome Hill Station owner David Douglas told Stuff the crash happened in a remote area of his station.

The pair were with a tour group that did not have permission to be on his property, he said.

"We have hunters that go out there but we know about the hunters, they ask permission."

The crash happened near Crumb Hut, about 30 kilometres from Douglas' house on his 7500-hectare sheep and beef farm.

The hut is used for musterers at Dome Hill.

Douglas said it was uncommon for tours to venture around the Kakanui ranges.

It was "too late" for him to say how he felt about tours operating on his land without permission.

"Once these things happened and there's two people killed, there's nothing more to be said really."
